Zong Unveils Powerful 5G Infrastructure as PTA Conducts Critical Twin Cities Network Assessment

Islamabad International Airport emerged as a key demonstration site during the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s (PTA) Quality of Experience (QoE) assessment of mobile networks across Islamabad and Rawalpindi, with Zong showcasing its 5G-enabled indoor connectivity infrastructure.

The telecom operator has deployed a 5G Active Distributed Antenna System (DAS) Indoor Building Solution at the airport, which it says makes it the only mobile operator to have implemented the technology at the facility. The infrastructure is designed to improve indoor network coverage and provide reliable connectivity in one of the capital’s busiest public spaces.

The deployment was highlighted during PTA’s on-ground assessment, led by Chairman Major General (Retd.) Hafeez Ur Rehman. The exercise involved senior officials from PTA, MoITT, mobile network operators and media representatives, with teams evaluating voice and data services across multiple locations.

The assessment examined real-world mobile network performance, including download speeds, call stability, connectivity and service continuity. PTA said initial findings reflected strong network performance and improvements in service quality and reliability across the surveyed areas.

Beyond its airport deployment, Zong has surpassed 1,000 5G sites nationwide, including more than 275 5G-enabled sites across Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The company says this represents the highest 5G site deployment in the twin cities.

Zong is also strengthening its network through technologies such as Carrier Aggregation, which combines multiple spectrum carriers to increase bandwidth and improve network efficiency.

At Islamabad International Airport, the company has also established a Customer Facilitation Desk to provide travelers with SIM activation, data services and on-ground support.

PTA said the field assessment was designed to evaluate actual consumer experience, identify potential service gaps and encourage continued improvements in mobile network quality. The regulator reaffirmed its commitment to sustained monitoring and coordination with telecom operators to strengthen service delivery.

The airport deployment reflects the growing role of advanced indoor connectivity infrastructure in supporting reliable digital services at major public facilities.
