Online Learning Cyber Threats: Shocking 60% of Learners Hit, Kaspersky Reveals

Islamabad: Online learning cyber threats are affecting a large share of students, according to new research from Kaspersky. Almost 60% of people who studied online or in a hybrid format over the past 12 months experienced at least one digital incident related to their learning. Among those victims, one in four lost money.

How Many People Are Learning Online?

Digital education tools and services now run across desktops, laptops, tablets and ARM-based Windows devices. Many people regard them as an effective choice for studying online.

According to the Kaspersky survey, 62% of respondents had taken part in some form of education in the past 12 months. Most of them did so at least partly online: 45% studied in a fully online format and 40% in a hybrid format.

The Most Common Online Learning Cyber Threats

Suspicious messages or links topped the list, affecting 27% of respondents. The survey found these other incidents:

  • Fake apps or websites: 20%
  • Scams through online communities or messaging groups: 18%
  • Fake courses or education providers: 17%
  • Malware in educational files or apps: 16%
  • Personal data exposure: 16%
  • Unrecognised certificates: 14%
  • Account hacking: 10%

The Real Cost for Victims

Spam emails and other scams in online education can seriously disrupt both studies and wider digital life. They may lead to data loss, money loss or even device failure.

Among those who experienced an incident:

  • 47% lost time
  • 42% received unwanted advertising
  • 34% lost trust in educational platforms
  • 25% suffered financial loss, equal to roughly one in seven of all learners surveyed

Kaspersky Extends Protection to ARM-Based Windows PCs

As digital education spreads across desktops, laptops and tablets, interest in ARM-based Windows PCs for study is also growing. Protection has to follow learners across every device they use.

Kaspersky is therefore expanding its security portfolio to ARM-based Windows PCs, such as devices powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon X, Snapdragon X Plus and Snapdragon X Elite. This extends its AI-powered scam and malware protection to a broader range of platforms used in digital education.

Marina Titova, Vice President for Consumer Business at Kaspersky, said:

“We see a growing demand for advanced training courses and university programs delivered online. This rapid digitalization, coupled with an evolving threat landscape, creates a clear need for comprehensive digital-life protection. Losing a thesis because a ransomware blocks a computer, paying for a fake course or having an account compromised after clicking a malicious chat link are serious risks that anyone studying online can face. With Kaspersky now supporting ARM-based devices, our solutions extend AI-powered scam protection to an even broader range of platforms, ensuring that all user’s online activities are secured.”

How to Stay Safe From Online Learning Cyber Threats

Kaspersky experts recommend a few practical steps:

  1. Use a different password for each learning platform or service. The Kaspersky Password Generator can create unique, complex passwords, and Kaspersky Password Manager can store them securely.
  2. Use a trusted security solution such as Kaspersky Premium. It includes AI-powered scam protection, a unified suite that combines machine learning-based anti-phishing algorithms, real-time behaviour monitoring, and Data Leak and Identity Theft checkers.

Final Thoughts

The findings show that online learning cyber threats are now a normal part of studying online, not a rare exception. With nearly 60% of online and hybrid learners affected, careful habits and reliable protection matter on every device a student uses.
